About MGallery Santa Teresa Hotel

A hillside coffee farm where you watch Rio's sunset from your pool as exotic birds sing.
Forget everything you think you know about Rio hotels and embrace the Santa Teresa. A secret hideaway on a hilltop where coffee once grew and artists now live, the property started life as an 1850s coffee farm and you can still feel the laidback soul in every corner, from the bird-filled gardens to the lazy breakfasts on the terrace overlooking Guanabara Bay. The French owners who transformed the hotel into what it is today, understood something crucial: sometimes the best way to experience a city is from a beautiful distance. Here, you're close enough to dive into Rio's chaos but far enough away to have a moment to yourself when needed.

Property details

The property

As well as its external 1850s architecture, the Santa Teresa is home to plenty of Brazilian design treasures: furniture by Sergio Rodrigues, artwork by Zemog, and beautiful craft pieces from local artisans that tell Brazil's cultural story. Outside, the pretty gardens attract toucans and tropical birds, while the chilled-out pool terrace is all about those legendary city views. Térèze restaurant is at the heart of the hotel, its tables spilling onto terraces shaded by century-old trees, whilst Bar dos Descasados, is an art gallery by day and cocktail destination by night. And then there's Le Spa by L'Occitane, providing a dollop of serenity to Rio's energy.

The rooms

The 42 rooms are decorated with beautiful Brazilian design pieces and connected to gardens through floor-to-ceiling windows. Superior rooms have king beds and garden or neighbourhood views, while the deluxe rooms add private balconies and enormous, soaking bathtubs. Suites include separate lounges and those coveted mountain or bay views that make every morning feel like a revelation.

Activities

Explore Santa Teresa's cobblestone streets lined with beautiful galleries and ateliers, and then head to the famous Selarón Steps, just minutes away from the hotel. You are in within easy reach of Cristo Redentor, Pão de Açúcar, and all of Rio's iconic sights, and the historic Santa Teresa tram (when running!) is a scenic way to travel downtown (and explore Lapa's nightlife if the mood takes you!). The hotel can also organise cooking classes focusing on contemporary Brazilian cuisine and book spa treatments for you.

Something to think about

Some find the Santa Teresa's intimacy charming; others feel limited by the smaller pool and restaurant options, compared to the larger Rio resorts.
