No fortress in the desert would be complete without a sparkling pool, which just happens to be the perfect vantage point for wildlife and bird spotting. Jewel-bright peacock murals adorn the pool lounge walls with matching cushions on stone bankettes. The library makes for a lovely place to recline with cushy couches, stacks of books and a cosy fireplace. Enjoy a little rejuvenation at the Vilasa spa and tasty meals with a top notch wine list in the dining area.
Mihir Garh has nine large suites each named after Marwari stallions, and decorated with lovely bespoke furnishings. You'll also find amentities like a flat screen TV, tea and coffee facilities and a mini bar. The ground floor Alishan suites come with a glorious plunge pool, colourful feature walls and a personal courtyard. On the first floor, two-bedroom Shandar suites have a bubbling open-air jacuzzi and private terrace. The eclectic decor combines rich, patterned rugs and hand-crafted fireplaces. En-suite bathrooms have deep bathtubs with high windows to let in the crisp desert view.
As we hinted before, Mihir Garh doesn't disappoint in the activities department with memorable outings by the camel-load. Get to know some of the local people with a trip to the village where you'll visit families at home and learn about their way of life. Head out for a scenic picnic by the lake where you may even spot antelope stopping for a drink, or enjoy a Shikar Dinner of Indian barbecue beneath the stars as Rajasthani folk music fills the air. The crowning jewel at Mihir Garh is the horseriding where the landscape becomes your playground - keep an eye out for buck and birds (there are up to 200 species in the winter months).
A melee of sky-blue buildings, medieval streets and the mightiest fort of them all, Mehrangarh.
