On a cliff above the Arabian Sea, a short hop from Kovalam, Niraamaya Surya Samudra was doing the boutique-resort thing decades before the label existed. Expect terracotta floors, carved wooden doors, four-poster beds under mosquito netting and antique Kerala furniture throughout. Ask for anything right on the cliff edge; the extra walk is worth it.
Mornings start with yoga on a pavilion that looks straight out to sea, or a walk down to the fish market with the chef to pick that day's catch (the sole reason your dinner will taste so fresh). Ayurvedic treatments run most afternoons; book the full consultation, not just a massage, if you've the time. Beyond the gates, hop in a boat and drift through the backwaters at Poovar, or head into Kovalam for the beach, the lighthouse and the crowds you've been pleasantly avoiding.
Knowing that every wooden pillar in your cottage held up someone's Kerala farmhouse a century before it held up your bed. Nothing here was built to look old; it actually is.
