The main area of Nyungwe House surveys the luscious tea plantation to one side, and the national forest on the other. The rambling architecture gives it a historic feel, though it's decidedly current with its stylish decor and modern luxuries. Al fresco dining takes place on the verandah, or in the wooden fenced traditional boma, next to an open fire. The restaurant is a formal affair, and has its own terrace, tea lounge and bar. There's also an outdoor heated swimming pool, fitness centre, and a relaxation retreat with massages and pedicures.
Nyungwe has 22 luxury rooms, housed in wooden villas, with four rooms to a building. You'll find everything you would expect from an international hotel brand, and the traditional Rwandan art and captivating views remind you of exactly where you are. Each also has an open fireplace to ward off the chill as the mist descends.
Hiking in the national park is the primary activity that draws guests to Nyungwe House. The most popular hikes include chimpanzee trekking, black and white colobus monkey trekking and grey-cheeked mangabey trekking, but there are also walks to nearby Kamiranzovu Swamps and the pretty waterfalls. There are also canopy tours and specialized cultural walks on offer. Keen birders will be especially spoiled here, with giant hornbills, great blue turacos and red-breasted sparrow hawks all in the vicinity. The hotel's wellness retreat is also top-notch and offers holistic, Rwandan-inspired treatments and al-fresco yoga.
A place for primate lovers, stop off and search for chimps and monkeys in the jungled rainforest.
