The gateway to the driest sand desert on Earth, San Pedro de Atacama is a town with such deep-rooted history and scenery, you’ll be reaching for your camera as soon as you arrive. One of the latest additions to this corner of Chile is Our Habitas, a beacon of sustainability that gives a donation to cultural and environmental initiatives for every guest that stays. It is also a wonderful base for exploring the Atacama Desert on hikes across the Valley of the Moon, paragliding adventures above the burnt-orange dunes, and visits to sites of significant pre-Columbian history.

Our Habitas was designed to reflect the stark beauty of its surroundings with sandy stone walls and wrap-around windows that let in the plentiful sunlight. In the Almas restaurant, you’ll find a tasty menu of hearty dishes, most of which use locally-produced ingredients and are prepared over a wood fire. When you’re not off exploring the sights, visit the spa for indulgent, Chilean treatments or join in with the daily sound baths or guided meditations. In a secluded courtyard, you’ll find a sparkling pool surrounded by white cushioned loungers.
The hotel has 51 rooms, featuring traditional stonework, locally-produced furniture and beautiful tapestries. Decorated with a minimalist touch, the rooms were designed to provide a sanctuary for unwinding and getting back to nature - note the absence of a TV. What you will find are pillowy, king-sized beds, enormous closets and well-stocked minibars. The bathrooms are rustic yet elegant with carved wooden basins and mirrors, and huge rainfall showers. Outside, there are private patios with tree-trunk columns from which you can gaze at the stars in the evening.
You’ll have ample opportunity to explore the marvels of the Atacama Desert, from trekking through the surreal Valley of the Moon, sandboarding down dunes, and biking amongst sea-blue lagoons where you can float weightlessly thanks to their high salt content. The hotel also offers various workshops to learn about the region’s medicinal plants, ceramics and crafting traditions and cuisine. We also love the stargazing experience with the expert astronomers.
San Pedro de Atacama has become a hub of astro tourism and the stargazing is truly out of this world. And there’s around 300 cloudless nights a year for you to enjoy it.
With added space and its own private terrace, the Trekker Villa is fantastic for groups or families.
With 51 rooms, Our Habitas is larger than properties in the Atacama Desert, which may not be to everyone’s preference.
