Have you ever wanted to sleep in glass capsule, suspended 270-metres into the air on the side of a cliff face? No, us neither… and then Ovo Patagonia came along. Reached by a rambling hike through handsome native forest and then a short walk on a Via Ferrata, each of the four transparent ‘rooms’ has extraordinary 360-degrees views across the landscape, all the way to Mount Fitz Roy and the Andes beckoning in the distance. Designed as a cosy refuge from the Patagonian elements, there’s a bed on the top floor, a small sitting room and bathroom in the middle, and underneath, a hang-out net for the ultimate adrenalin-pumping experience. It might not be for the faint hearted, but boy are the OVOs a true once-in-a-lifetime adventure…

There’s not really a main area as such, but there are several reception areas and a wind shelter to break up the hike to the pods. You’ll also have a safety briefing along the way and be given your harness (and instructions on how to use it). There are also lockers if you want to store any excess baggage for the night. Meals are all eaten in your private capsule – dinner as dusk falls and breakfast at 8am, just before departure.
Each pod is constructed of transparent polycarbonate and secured to the rockface by reinforced steel cables. Inside, there are three floors: a bedroom on the top, a sitting room and bathroom with dry toilet and a vanity in the middle (there are showers at one of the reception areas), and a netted hang out area on the bottom, for the real 360-degree experience. The sleeping area has curtains, although keeping them open is all part of the fun, and all pods are solar-powered.
There are two OVO experiences available: an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast in your pod, or an OVO VISIT, which is a hike to the pods, a peek inside, snacks and refreshments, and then back down again. Once in situ, it’s all about the views. This part of Patagonia is stunningly beautiful and the scene sprawls ahead in a carpet of lakes, forests and of course, mountains. Highlights are the views of Mount Fitz Roy and, if you’re staying the night, the stars in one of the clearest night skies in the world (each pod has a telescope to aid gazing).
The views, the sunsets, the stars… and the utter heart-pounding, nerve-shattering experience of it all!
The guided trek and Via Ferrata walk to reach the pods is challenging and you will need to have a good walking fitness (but no climbing experience is required).
Wi-Fi is only available in the reception areas and not in the individual pods.
