About Rare Earth Country House

Your own private country getaway in a sea of Garden Route vineyards
The farm known as Kay and Monty Vineyards lies 26-odd kilometres from Plettenberg Bay in the lush area known as The Crags, a particularly pretty part of the Garden Route. On the farm, surrounded by vines, is Rare Earth Country House, a restored farmhouse that's available for exclusive use only (max 10 people). Explore the property on foot or horseback, by bicycle or quad-bike. Head to the tasting room to sample the estate's award-winning wines, and to the on-site restaurant if you're not in a cooking frame of mind. Then sit back and enjoy the real good life.

Property details

The property

The spacious farmhouse offers plenty of common room to sprawl, with an open-plan lounge-cum-bar area that incorporates two seating nooks. A separate dining room and kitchen are well-equipped, and the undercover poolside patio (accessed via large glass double doors) is the perfect setting for a candlelit dinner. Cushioned sunloungers surround the small L-shaped swimming pool. Cast your eyes around to take in the 360-degree views of hillsides, vineyards and horses.

The rooms

The five luxurious bedrooms have understated shabby-chic decor and are drenched in loads of natural light, thanks to ample windows and a set of French doors. They are functional and immaculate, with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, and either a king-sized or two twin beds. Most rooms have doors opening to the garden. The bathrooms are positively colossal, with double basins, superb deep bathtubs and high-pressure showers.

Activities

Many guests enjoy sticking close to home, making the most of all there is to see and do on the farm. From riding horses and wandering through the stables, fishing in the dam, hiking the network of trails and birdwatching, there's plenty to keep you active. Gourmet picnicking on the farm is a perfect way to spend an afternoon, as is sampling the estate's varietals and chatting to the winemakers themselves. The Garden Route's attractions are on your doorstep.
