Surrounded by a lattice of vines and trees, the camp's main area blends into its setting with traditional thatch and brushed concrete, and a generous use of wood. This free-form structure incorporates both open-plan spaces and tucked-away sitting areas. The dining room is ringed by windows on one side and an open kitchen; outside is a pizza oven, and wooden decks that lead to natural forest-sheltered harbours as well as a spacious circular deck with a campfire at its centre.
From the main area, the camp's nine tents are accessed via raised boardwalks that are visited by monkeys and birds. Rooms are simple but perfectly comfortable, with stretched canvas walls, mesh windows, concrete floors, and shaded verandas out front. Inside is a queen-sized or two 3/4 beds, covered in mosquito netting. At the rear is an en-suite bathroom with shower, flush toilet and basin.
Akagera's rich habitats support a menagerie of wildlife: elephant, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, topi, eland, and roan antelope; several primate species; predators such as hyena, side-striped jackal, leopard, lion, hippo, and crocodile. Safari-style game drives get you to the action; and boat trips get you close to the aquatic life, and good fishing. As an advocate for conservation in the region, the park partners with several local villages, making cultural visits rewarding. Local guides are happy to discuss anti-poaching and history.
