Sable Alley is a recent addition to Botswana’s luxury safari camp portfolio, in a stunning and remote part of the private Khwai Concession alongside Moremi Game Reserve. This part of northern Botswana has an incredible diversity of landscapes, with the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta providing a vital lifeline in this otherwise arid wilderness. The camp overlooks a lagoon with fabulous views across the lily-covered waters and Moremi beyond, with twelve elegant safari tents stretching along the waters’ edge on either side of the main lodge. Game viewing is excellent, the level of guiding is first class and you get it all for a very reasonable price.

The main lodge has a comfortable lounge area on a raised timber deck, and open sides make the most of the views over the lagoon. The bar and dining terrace open onto a central fire pit surrounded by comfortable outdoor chairs, and there's also a swimming pool and sundeck at the front – a great spot to relax with a lunchtime cocktail. Have your binos ready at all times for the steady stream of wildlife coming to drink at the lagoon.
Twelve beautifully constructed tents on raised timber platforms are well spaced beneath the trees for maximum privacy. Pop out through the sliding glass panels at the front to your raised viewing deck, and really immerse yourself in the surrounding. Each tent is en-suite, with an indoor and outdoor shower, and all are airy and uncluttered. Lofty canvas ceilings, huge double or twin beds with mosquito nets and earthy natural tones offer all the luxuries without being over the top.
Sable Alley’s position on the game-rich floodplains along the Delta’s permanent lagoons and rivers offers a superb combination of land and water-based activities, with day and night game drives, walking safaris and mokoro trips on offer, and even boat cruises depending on the water levels. This region is renowned for huge numbers of elephant and buffalo, with ever-present plains game, prides of lion, and the exciting possibility of encountering African wild dogs. Birders are in for a treat, particularly on a guided mokoro trip along the waterways where you’ll spot vibrant birdlife on the papyrus-fringed banks.
Exploring this exclusive concession of the Okavango Delta. There are only three other lodges anywhere near you so it really does feel like your own.
The honeymoon suite has a beautiful outdoor bathtub and splashy shower – worth booking, even if you haven’t just said your vows.
The lodge runs like clockwork, which is, of course, excellent news but it can perhaps feel a little rigid at times.
Sable Alley is owned by Natural Selection which is dedicated to conservation, partnering with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect and expand conservation areas. They build eco-friendly camps that blend into the environment and aim to inform guests about Africa's wildlife challenges and successes, hoping to inspire further positive action for wildlife conservation. A contribution of $50 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
