A low white house tucked above Thompson's Bay, its rooms all angled toward the same restless stretch of the Indian Ocean. Sala means "stay" in Zulu, and the family behind it - the Rutherfoords, who've run the Ghost Mountain Inn in Zululand since 1962 - clearly took the name as an instruction. Interiors were sourced personally by the owners with Boyd Ferguson of Cécile & Boyd (the design studio behind more than a dozen Singita lodges), and it shows in the restraint: whites, clay reds and a lot of raw wood, nothing shouting for attention. A sheltered inner courtyard with its own plunge pool exists for exactly one reason - when the sea wind picks up, you retreat inward rather than inside. The sundeck's ocean hammock gets more praise in guest reviews than the food does. That's saying something.
Ten keys across a main house and a separate three-bedroom villa, most gazing straight out to sea (the Courtyard Suite is the exception, facing palms instead of waves - some guests prefer it).
