Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is a luxurious hideaway tucked into the mountain with stylish but earthy décor, including beautiful textiles and exposed stonework. Edged with greenery and featuring an orchid garden, the lodge teems with hummingbirds and butterflies - and with mesmerising views of Huayna Picchu mountain, the lovely outdoor courtyard is fantastic for chilling, as is the spa with its open-air treatment areas. The food is innovative and delicious, as are the cocktails; it’s a good thing standard reservations are full-board.
All 32 rooms and suites offer views of the seemingly endless mountains surrounding the Inca citadel. Interiors feature cool fabrics combined with dark woods, and all rooms have plush King-sized or twin beds, a satellite TV, minibar and marble bathrooms with standing showers. Some superior and deluxe rooms have private terraces too - the perfect spot for a nightcap or muña tea. Because of the location rooms aren’t huge, except the one-bedroom suite with separate living area and enormous private terrace.
As you’d expect, the lodge offers many activities related to exploring Machu Picchu in the best way possible. And rest assured, the guides are utterly fantastic. If you're looking to delve deeper into the culture, payments to the earth, coca leaf readings and vow renewals are also available with the guidance of a shaman. The spa is absolute heaven (massage with a side of Huayna Picchu views? Yes please!), or simply pause and take time to soak it all in - staying here is an experience that deserves to be savoured, after all.
