The main lodge area consists of a spacious indoor restaurant with an open fireplace, and the famous pub, which over the years has built a reputation for its sociable atmosphere – a lively spot to meet other travellers and add your name to the thousands of signatures on the walls. There’s a small wine cellar to one side, and a wide viewing deck in front of the restaurant with fantastic views over the escarpment.
There are ten comfortable thatch and stone rondavels, six of which have double or twin beds and a rustic country style, and four more modern family units with double beds and bunk beds. Each is en-suite, with a fireplace. The lodge also has five backpacker dorms each accommodating up to six people, with self-catering facilities and shared ablutions. Camping offers a real back-to-basics option – temperatures plummet below zero during winter, so make sure you’re fully prepared.
A number of hiking trails radiate from the lodge, from short, easy walks along the escarpment, to strenuous all-day hikes in the surrounding mountains. Horse riding can be arranged with local guides, with the chance to visit traditional Basotho villages along the way and gain insight into Lesotho’s rich culture. The challenging terrain is a magnet for keen mountain bikers, trail runners and 4x4 enthusiasts, and during winter, heavy snowfalls bring with them the opportunity to ski and snowboard.
