Saseka Tented Camp

The camp's design is truly original, blending beachy thatch with contemporary angles, modern furnishings with a smattering of antiques – that may sound chaotic, but it really works! The undulating deck blends intimate seating areas with others that keep an uninterrupted eye on the wilderness. You'll find cushioned chaises and clever hanging recliners. Most meals take place on the covered deck, but there are also pleasant interiors in which to rest, including a book-filled lounge with a stone fireplace.

Eight open-plan, stretched-canvas tent structures are elevated in the tree canopy and surrounded by tiered decking, with a plunge pool. The walls are (almost) all glass, and the canvas ceilings are decorated with old-style botanical drawings. Each has a four-poster bed flanked by a cushioned sofa/daybed and a dressing area. Behind a screen wall, the bathroom has a claw-foot tub and walk-in shower (there's another outdoors). Leadwood Villa, with its dedicated safari vehicle, is perfect for families or small groups.

Your day will start early – before dawn, usually – around the fire with a cup of coffee. You're shivering at the thought, but those early game drives offer the best chance of seeing (and photographing) wildlife at its most active. Late-afternoon drives also capitalise on the peak points of action, with sunset stops for your obligatory sundowner. Night drives are possible to catch some of the lesser-seen movers and shakers, including aardvark, aardwolf, honey badger, bushbaby and pangolin.
