The lodge is spread out along the sloping riverbanks, with the Duck and Donkey Tavern and Restaurant in the heart of the grounds. This is a lively spot, popular with locals and guests alike, and a great place to relax at the end of each day and share adventures with other travellers. The restaurant can be unpredictable, but generally serves wholesome food from local produce. For self-catering guests, there’s a communal kitchen and barbecue facilities, with shaded outdoor picnic tables.
Accommodation consists of a number of stone and thatch rooms and bungalows varying in size from double or twins, to larger family units, with comfortable cottage-style interiors, beautiful open fireplaces and en-suite bathrooms. The cottages are well spaced out in the gardens, with winding stone pathways leading down the the restaurant and bar. Two backpacker-style dorms offer good shared accommodation, and there are basic campsites next to the river, with plug points, a shower block, and barbecue facilities.
The high mountains are a magnet for hikers, rock climbers and mountain bikers (you'll need to be reasonably fit), and there’s a network of 4x4 trails varying from easy scenic drives to extremely challenging and technical routes. Test your nerves on the world’s highest single-drop abseil down Maletsunyane Falls. Or try trekking on a local, sure-footed pony – a great way to explore this incredible landscape, with day rides or longer multi-day expeditions, staying at local villages along the way.
