About Semonkong Lodge

A rustic highland retreat in the spectacular mountain kingdom of Lesotho
Lesotho is a small, intriguing country deeply landlocked within South Africa’s mountainous interior. Away from its populated areas, dramatic mountains, deep canyons and spectacular waterfalls combine to create an incredible sense of space and isolation. It's no wonder that Lesotho is a hot favourite with the outdoor adventure fraternity. Tucked away in the Maluti Mountains is Semonkong Lodge, a gathering of rustic thatch-and-stone cottages, backpacker dorms, and campsites set beside one of the highest waterfalls in Africa. Comfortable accommodation, friendly atmosphere and exciting activities make this a great choice for an action-packed getaway – and it's excellent value for money.

Property details

The property

The lodge is spread out along the sloping riverbanks, with the Duck and Donkey Tavern and Restaurant in the heart of the grounds. This is a lively spot, popular with locals and guests alike, and a great place to relax at the end of each day and share adventures with other travellers. The restaurant can be unpredictable, but generally serves wholesome food from local produce. For self-catering guests, there’s a communal kitchen and barbecue facilities, with shaded outdoor picnic tables.

The rooms

Accommodation consists of a number of stone and thatch rooms and bungalows varying in size from double or twins, to larger family units, with comfortable cottage-style interiors, beautiful open fireplaces and en-suite bathrooms. The cottages are well spaced out in the gardens, with winding stone pathways leading down the the restaurant and bar. Two backpacker-style dorms offer good shared accommodation, and there are basic campsites next to the river, with plug points, a shower block, and barbecue facilities.

Activities

The high mountains are a magnet for hikers, rock climbers and mountain bikers (you'll need to be reasonably fit), and there’s a network of 4x4 trails varying from easy scenic drives to extremely challenging and technical routes. Test your nerves on the world’s highest single-drop abseil down Maletsunyane Falls. Or try trekking on a local, sure-footed pony – a great way to explore this incredible landscape, with day rides or longer multi-day expeditions, staying at local villages along the way.
