About Shinde Footsteps

Get back to basics with a back to nature experience at this remote Delta camp.
Previously known as Footsteps Across the Delta, this mobile tented camp is located in the Shinde Private Concession in the northern Okavango Delta. Surrounded by a riverine forest, it lies adjacent to a lagoon that is home to pods of hippo, whose calls may be the strangest sounds to ever greet you at dawn. Access is by light aircraft, followed by a 40–90-minute transfer (it's a quicker journey when the water is low). Expect a minimalist approach to bush exploration, ensuring the richest and most raw experience of the African wilds. Walking is the go-to activity, with optional game drives and mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions, depending on flood levels.

Property details

The property

The main area takes the form of a long gazebo-style tent, with a tea and coffee station and bar at one end and a long table for dining at the other. (If you're concerned about the meals, don't be, they are terrific.) Minimalism is the key to this set-up, with no distraction or unnecessary luxuries to keep you from exploring the wilds. Outside, an elevated mound with fold-out chairs affords stunning views of the lagoon and its wildlife.

The rooms

Shinde Footsteps has just three spacious, meru-style tents, sleeping six guests in total at a time. The tents are clean, comfortable and, importantly, insect-proof. All the accommodation is simple, but every need has been met. You sleep in comfortable twin beds, with a small table and shelving for your clothes. The private bucket shower and porcelain long-drop toilets are a comforting touch. There are no frills to distract you from an adventure in the uninterrupted wilderness.

Activities

Walking safaris into the bush are the principal focus at Footsteps. Accompanied by your experienced, bushwise guide, you'll unearth the mysteries of this beautiful wilderness, from the tiniest termites to mighty bull elephants. And don’t worry about training before hand, this is a journey of discovery. The back-up options of game drive and mokoro safaris offer exploration from a different perspective.

Something to think about

Something to think about

While the experiences here are unparalleled, Footsteps is definitely not for the faint of heart. It's rustic and the comforts are limited so you must be happy to be in the elements.
