About Skybeds

An unusual alfresco experience atop a high platform in the beautiful Khwai Reserve.
We've noticed recently that something strange is happening in the world of safari camps: Wi-Fi when you should be tuning your senses to the bush? Three course meals with all the queen's cutlery when you should be eating a finger-licking meal around the fire? Not at the Skybeds! Located northeast of the Okavango Delta in Khwai Private Reserve, bordering Moremi Game Reserve, these rustic platforms are the ultimate immersion in the wilderness. Head to the top of your three-storey platform for uninterrupted views over the vast, unfenced reserve and then fall asleep under a star-splattered sky. Here, there's nothing to worry about and everything to enjoy.

Property details

The property

The Skybeds are situated 22 kilometres north of the Khwai River in an open patch of mopane woodland, overlooking a bustling waterhole. The dining deck is raised on stilts, allowing you to enjoy hearty meals (and an ice-cold G&T) accompanied by the gruntings and rustlings of the wildlife at the nearby waterhole. There’s no electricity here (and definitely no Wifi), but you can charge camera batteries from the vehicle if required.

The rooms

An exceptionally simple but clever design, the three-storey treehouse-like skybeds provide the prefect amount of shelter and comfort. Up a few stairs on the first floor is an enclosed bathroom with flush toilet and hot shower. At the very top is an open-platform with a large double bed and seating area. The bed is indeed the cherry-on-top - a plush mattress with starched white linens and soft pillow, all draped in mosquito netting. At night, flickering paraffin lanterns strung throughout the platform hark back to safaris of old...

Activities

After spending a few nights at neighbouring camps in this marvellous concession of the Delta, take a slow drive to Skybeds to conclude your stay. The area immediately around the camp is largely mopane woodland, though a drive to the camp will take you through diverse habitats and produce some exceptional sightings. Once at the Skybeds, the waterhole, and sitting in such close proximity to it, is the primary reason for coming – and staying! The camp is only open during the driest months (May to October) and this is definitely the best time to see the animals as they seek out shrinking water sources.

What you'll love

What you'll love

It's what is missing from the Skybeds that makes it so utterly appealing. No Wifi, no plunge pools, no fussy details - just you, your open-air bed and the wilderness.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

It's not just about the night sky here - the dry season brings fantastic elephant viewing at the waterhole, so remember to look down as well as up.

The impact of your stay

Skybeds is owned by Natural Selection which is dedicated to conservation, partnering with local communities, governments, and organizations to protect and expand conservation areas. They build eco-friendly camps that blend into the environment and aim to inform guests about Africa's wildlife challenges and successes, hoping to inspire further positive action for wildlife conservation. A contribution of $50 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
