About Suryauday Haveli

A riverfront hotel by the Shivala Ghat on the southern section of the River Ganges.
This boutique property, originally built by the royal family of Nepal, occupies a special place on the banks of the Ganges. The city of Varanasi has 88 ghats, traditional stone steps that lead down to the holy River Ganges, and Suryauday Haveli is beautifully located on the Shivala Ghats, on the southern, quieter section of the water. Dating back to the early 20th century, the hotel gives a deep sense of the area's history, architecture and culture, with the aim of giving all guests a traditional ghat experience.

Property details

The property

Originally constructed by the royal family of Nepal, Suryauday Haveli is a tribute to the traditional architecture of the city. Inside, the interiors are cosy and comfortable and very welcoming. There's an onsite restaurant, and whilst it might only serve vegetarian fare, we think you'll find it suitably delicious. Delicacies on offer include muttar paneer, kofta-methi, Baranasi dum aloo and many more. Remember that as with all properties on the ghats of this city, the hotel is strictly alcohol free.

The rooms

Suryauday is a small, highly personal hotel and there are just 14 rooms to choose from. Eight rooms and one suite face the river (try and nab one of these if you can - there's nothing better than waking in the morning to life on the water) and they all have ensuite bathrooms, TVs (not that you'll need them), and air-conditioning, making for an incredibly comfortable stay in the city.

Activities

With guides and boats always available to guests, you'll have ample opportunity to explore Varanasi and its wide and varied history. Alternatively, take to the streets and wander straight into the city from the hotel door and soak up everything Varanasi has to offer. There are also other day trips on offer that will take you further afield to see local weavers with their traditional silk looms, or into the nearby towns of Sarnath and Bodgaya.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Reaching the hotel requires either a 15-minute boat ride or a wander through the winding alleys of Varanasi's old town, but the journey is well worth the effort.

India

Varanasi

Amongst the oldest inhabited cities on the planet, Varanasi is spiritual and soulful India down to a tee.
