Originally constructed by the royal family of Nepal, Suryauday Haveli is a tribute to the traditional architecture of the city. Inside, the interiors are cosy and comfortable and very welcoming. There's an onsite restaurant, and whilst it might only serve vegetarian fare, we think you'll find it suitably delicious. Delicacies on offer include muttar paneer, kofta-methi, Baranasi dum aloo and many more. Remember that as with all properties on the ghats of this city, the hotel is strictly alcohol free.
Suryauday is a small, highly personal hotel and there are just 14 rooms to choose from. Eight rooms and one suite face the river (try and nab one of these if you can - there's nothing better than waking in the morning to life on the water) and they all have ensuite bathrooms, TVs (not that you'll need them), and air-conditioning, making for an incredibly comfortable stay in the city.
With guides and boats always available to guests, you'll have ample opportunity to explore Varanasi and its wide and varied history. Alternatively, take to the streets and wander straight into the city from the hotel door and soak up everything Varanasi has to offer. There are also other day trips on offer that will take you further afield to see local weavers with their traditional silk looms, or into the nearby towns of Sarnath and Bodgaya.
Amongst the oldest inhabited cities on the planet, Varanasi is spiritual and soulful India down to a tee.
