It might be small, but India loves its food and The Claridges has a whopping four restaurants to choose from - sample reworked Punjabi classics in Dhaba, visit the Mediterranean in Sevilla, or spot trendy locals in the new sushi bar. At the front of the hotel are the lovely lawns, complete with frilly parasols and pagodas, and at the rear is the swimming pool, surrounded by plenty of curtained cabanas and ideal for a spot of R&R, whatever stage of your Indian adventure you are at. There’s also a gym and a small spa here too.
Whilst the rooms differ quite remarkably in the size, they are all classically decorated in neutral tones, silk bedspreads and historical artworks. The Superior rooms are the smallest (and they really are quite small) so it’s definitely worth thinking about booking one of the higher categories for a touch more space. All have plenty of tech to keep you going, including air con, flat screen TVs and very fancy coffee makers. Bathrooms are shiny, marble affairs and have a range of showers, baths or both.
As with most city hotels, The Claridges would be delighted to organise a driver and car for the day to see the sights. High on the list are the Red Fort, India Gate, the markets of Old Delhi and Humayun’s Tomb, but there are plenty of smaller museums and galleries that are also worth a visit. Shoppers should head to the Khan Market for a selection of quirky boutiques or the upmarket stores on Janpath Road for the ultimate souvenirs. Back at the hotel, it’s all about lazy afternoons by the pool or in the gardens – and sometimes, that is just what’s called for.
Begin or end a trip in the pulsing capital and let the sights, sounds and smells get under your skin.
