Where craggy-faced mountains, abundant valleys and relics from Thailand's ancient kingdoms meet, Chiang Rai is a picturesque village to relax for a few days. Perched along the river, The Legend was inspired by textured Lanna design while bringing its style a few centuries forward with breezy tropical rooms, manicured lawns and a freeform infinity pool (with a whirlpool hot tub!). There's plenty of rustic charm to go around with scenic hikes in search of a waterfall to swim below and the chance to spend time with members of a local hill tribe. After a day of temple-spotting, settle on the riverbank for a cocktail while the sun sets.
Get your fix of mountain views and Thai cuisine at the open-sided sala (even meals are prepared at the outdoor kitchen) or swap tom kha kai - chicken in coconut soup - for wood-fired pizzas at La Casa. Breakfasts on the terrace include omelettes to order, croissants and local favourites. Spread out on the lawns, the Suan Chainam serves vintage wines, craft beers and cocktails with tasty barbecue. With vintage furnishings and ornate decor, the lobby lounge is perfect to relax with a book.
The Legend has 78 summery studios or villas, decorated with light teak furnishings and cream tones. Cushy beds are covered by mosquito nets and sliding glass doors open onto a balcony (the Superior Studio has two with hanging chairs to sink into). The larger villas have one or two bedrooms, and come with a dining area, private pool and spacious deck with a bar. Minimalist and partially open to the elements, the bathrooms have over-sized tubs, stone basins and a rainfall shower.
Take in the sights of Chiang Rai, from the whimsical 'White Temple' with its glacier-like facade and amazing art collection, to the shining King Meng Rai monument. Venture higher to see Mae Fah Lunag Garden with 10 acres of swirling flower designs, or hike to Doi Chang for an epic view and an afternoon of getting to know the fascinating hill tribes. Visit an elephant sanctuary where you'll join the pachyderms for a stroll, lunch and a splash in the mud (don't worry, that's just for the elephants!).
The spa is a delight. Beneath a canopy of netting in a pavilion (or air-conditioned suite), be pampered by expert hands before taking a dip in the natural splash pool.
It's easy to nip into central Chang Rai with the hotel's daily trips by trishaw - or simply hop on a waiting bicycle.
A part of the bathroom is open to the elements, which can let the chill (and an insect population) in.
Head off radar and escape to nature in the spectacular hills of northern Thailand.
