About Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Sir Edmund Hillary's favourite hilltop hideaway, watched over by Himalayan giants.

Perched a thousand feet above Pokhara Valley, Tiger Mountain delivers views that make you temporarily forget your own name. Three 8,000-metre peaks – Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu – dominate the horizon, while the sacred Fishtail mountain peeks through the morning mist. This isn't your typical mountain lodge however, but a stone village dreamt up by Harvard architects and blessed by Sir Edmund himself back in '98. The staff, most who have been here since day one, know every butterfly by name (there are 275!) and can spot a Himalayan griffon before you've finished your cup of tea. It's the perfect spot for pre-trek acclimatisation or simply hiding away from the world with a good book and even better views.

Property details

The property

Stone cottages tumble across the ridge in the form of a traditional Nepali village. The main lodge centres around a fireplace with an open roof – brilliant for stargazing between courses at dinner. Terraces seem to sprout everywhere, each claiming the best view and the infinity pool floats above the valley, though it's unheated so winter dips require commitment. Gardens run wonderfully wild with bamboo groves and fruit trees that attract enough birds to keep twitchers busy for weeks. And even better, WiFi is confined to public areas in a deliberate ploy to keep you present.

The rooms

18 stone cottages hunker into the hillside, each with a veranda positioned for maximum mountain drama. Inside, Tibetan rugs warm the slate floors while Luke Piper's watercolours and Colonel Jimmy's photographs remind you where you are. Beds are super-king or twin and piled with enough blankets to ward off a Himalayan winter, plus extra hot water bottles when the temperatures drop. There are no TVs, no safes and no distractions – just a kettle, organic Nepalese tea, and homemade snacks that disappear rather quickly. Bathrooms feature lovely local Ayurvedic toiletries (no minis in sight).

Activities

Morning walks with naturalist guides who've been counting birds here since 2005 reveal quaint villages and forests hiding 260 butterfly species. The lodge's cooking demonstrations turn dal bhat from mystery to mastery. Pokhara beckons below with paragliding launches at Sarangkot (for the brave), boat pottering on Phewa Lake (for the sensible), and the World Peace Pagoda (for everyone). Serious trekkers use the lodge as a launch pad for Annapurna adventures, while the golf course next door offers altitude training with a nine-iron. Sunrise meditation sessions happen when the clouds cooperate, which, thankfully, is often.

Colonel Jimmy's library packed with rare mountaineering books where you can plot imaginary expeditions while the actual Himalayas loom large outside.

Owner Marcus Cotton holds court most evenings with drinks and stories that'll teach you more about Nepal than any guidebook. Don't be shy about joining him.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Hot water runs on a schedule (morning and evening only) and the access road's a proper bone-shaker – you'll want that 4WD.

A lakeside base for Annapurna, with excellent cafés and zero pressure.
