Overlooking a lush forest, enjoy a dip in the granite-tiled infinity pool, but best to remember it's not heated. The library is a bright and cosy spot with pastel-coloured chairs to curl up with a book and plenty of board games. Dine in The Barn, inspired by traditional cardamom curing houses, where the staff give you a little back story for each meal. The Tea Shack is the go-to for chai brewed in a charcoal-fired 'samovar' and beneath The Boulder overhang, barbecues and bonfires await. It's also worth climbing to the top for an epic view!
Inspired by the original Planter's Bungalow, the 18 hand-crafted rooms are each unique as they were built at different times over the years. There are four rooms under one roof, each with high, beamed ceilings and terracotta or hardwood floors. Light and simple, they all come with an en-suite bathroom, hand-embroidered sheets and locally crafted furnishings. Each room has a veranda, living area and tea/coffee facilities; the Planter's Villa Suites have a double bedroom, balcony and French doors opening onto a private courtyard.
Surrounded by hill stations, leafy plantations and a plethora of wildlife sanctuaries, there is no shortage of activities to enjoy. Apart from reclining by the pool and birding walks across Windermere's 60 acres, head out on the tea trail where you can see how local plantations work and visit the fascinating Tea Museum. Hike through the forests to nearby stations or even the heady Meesapulimala, one of the highest peaks in the region - you may even spot the Grizzled Giant Squirrel. The Eravikulam National Park is an oasis of waterfalls and the endangered Nilgiri Thar.
Fill your lungs with crisp air and enjoy the mist-laden peaks and epic walks of the Western Ghats.
