About &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Jungle luxury in one of the only lodges inside Lake Manyara National Park.
Lake Manyara in northern Tanzanaia is most well known for its huge flocks of flamingos and its tree-climbing lions, but there's much more that makes it well worth a visit. There's an abundance of other wildlife too, including an impressive list of more than 400 bird species and a wildly varied landscape on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, from the mahogany and acacia forests and woodlands to the grass floodplains and the lake and its shore. The best way to visit this region is to stay at the stunningly opulent Tree Lodge in the national park where luxury is a way of life and true class elevates an experience of the wilderness around you to the next level.

Property details

The property

Open on three sides, the raised, spacious lounge has several comfortable sitting areas and a light, airy feel to it. It seamlessly combines contemporary design with classic natural features such as the thatched roof with a banana leaf underside. The downstairs dining room (which incorporates a small open-air kitchen) and deck is adorned with simple, elegant furnishings and makes extensive use of raw and polished wood. The deck provides lots of space for private dining, as does the large, sandy boma area with a fireplace at its centre. The swimming pool is surrounded by gorgeous, lush forest and plenty of reclining sunloungers.

The rooms

Ten private wooden "tree-house" chalets are set in the mahogany forest on elevated decks. The warm earthy colours and French doors exude comfort and elegance. The en-suite bathroom, separated by a long curtain, has a double basin, Victorian bath, an outside shower and lots of space. In addition to the very comfortable double bed, there is a private lounge and long wooden veranda, all with views of the surrounding forest that makes you feel a part of it.

Activities

Lake Manyara is a relatively small national park and is open to the public but Tree Lodge is right down in the south-west, far from the entrance gate and the majority of tourists. Hence, the game drives are fairly exclusive and chances of seeing some spectacular and unusual wildlife is good. Other activities are available at additional cost and include night drives, a visit to a Maasai village where you can share in a traditional meal or buy some beautiful beaded jewellery, or a bike ride through magnificent scenery to the nearby Mayoka village and back along the lake filled with prodigious flocks of flamingos.

What you'll love

What you'll love

The jungle setting is magical and soaking up the views of the surrounding forest from the comfort of your tree-house deck, bed or bath is the ultimate in (exceptionally luxurious!) R&R.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

If arriving by vehicle, try and take the seldom-used southern road to the camp. As you approach the park, you'll pass small villages and the scenery is dramatic and beautiful. Quite an entrance!
Something to think about

Something to think about

Often Lake Manyara is used as a stopover on the way to or from other parks, but to make the most of all the activities (and the beautiful rooms), we highly recommend two nights here.
