The double-storey, thatched main area is the perfect spot to enjoy in-between game viewing and relaxing. The expansive deck is accessed by a bridge and sits in the shade of ancient gnarled rock figs, and most dining will happen here. Think informal buffet-style breakfasts, home-cooked lunches and elegant evening meals. Dinners may also take place in the spacious traditional boma, an open-air corral where food is cooked on the fire. During the day, take a dip in the plunge pool, which is surrounded by a dark-wood deck with reclining sun-loungers.
There are eight smartly designed thatch-and-stone chalets, each nestled into the trees and positioned with views across the valley. Floors are wood and ceilings are high, with beds sitting in the centre in front of large sliding doors. Each has a small lounge and ensuite bathroom with shower and double basin. Decks wrap all around the rooms and have cushioned loungers for relaxing. Without trying too hard, the rooms exude an inviting rustic-elegance and are easy-going and decidedly comfortable.
The pleasure of safari is made plain here and the guides are excellent. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic, they will escort you twice a day on game drives or nature walks. Whilst Madikwe might not boast the size of other South African reserves, it's prime territory for iconic wildlife, as well as the lesser-seen desert-loving species like aardvark, aardvolf, pangolin and bat-eared foxes. There is also a good number of endangered wild dogs and, with their high-energy hunting, they provide some of the best viewing.
It’s easily accessible, malaria-free and you’ll spot the Big Five – what’s not to love?
