About Deteema Springs

A genuine little camp in remote and rugged northern Hwange, Zimbabwe's largest park.
Deteema Springs sits amid granite boulders and crooked mopane forests in the big-sky north of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park. This remote area is far less visited than other regions of Hwange, so its distinctive terrain of rugged hills and natural pools of groundwater, known as seeps, is untouched. Deteema shows more than a touch of that seductive pioneering spirit inherent to the concept of safari. There are just eight tents, so the camp is perfect for travellers longing for an intimate wildlife experience, with no crowds in sight, professional guiding, and down-to-earth accommodation.

Property details

The property

The simple tented main area is elevated slightly to offer views of a natural spring that is a key water source in the area. Watch the near-constant procession of wildlife, or gaze at the views from the lounge and dining room, with their roll-up sides. Little emphasis has been placed on interior decor, but the lounge and dining room are, nevertheless, very well-equipped. In front is a campfire, the heart of evening entertainment; and there's a pool for post-drive plunges.

The rooms

Deteema's eight safari tents are simple in style, with green canvas walls and enough room to comfortably accommodate twin or double beds, and an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and hot-and-cold running showers. Like the main area, the tents are raised on large wooden decks with views of the Deteema Springs.

Activities

You'll feel like a pioneering explorer when setting out from Deteema, especially on foot safaris. And that's part of this area's attraction... Walking safaris provide both excellent up-close viewing of big game and a more nuanced take on the little things that underpin this ecosystem. Drives open the landscape, which is vast and varied, and a treasure trove of wildlife big and small, including plentiful birds. Waterholes play a key role in game viewing, especially in the dry season.
