The main area's decidedly classic bushveld style includes dark leather furniture, wooden tables, old photographs on the walls, and a stone hearth topped with a pair of horns. The atmosphere is warm and unfussy, so you'll find yourself gathering here with the family regularly. There's a long dining table (meals are created by your private chef) and, outside, a winding veranda with a lovely rock-landscaped pool, covered seating/eating area, and fireplace surrounded by chairs – all overlooking a secluded riverbend.
Fitzpatrick's trio of suites continue the classic bushveld chic charm, with four-poster beds and solid wood furnishings. They're spotless and well-built, with all your needs provided, from minibars to aircon, en-suite bathrooms with walk-in rain showers, and large sliding glass doors opening to viewing decks. The most private, Room 1 has its own deck and plunge pool; Rooms 2 & 3 are joined, each with its own bathroom, but sharing a foyer, deck and plunge pool.
The lush private reserve that surrounds the Jock lodges allows for a few more activities than those permitted in Kruger – guided walks and night drives, for instance. Morning and afternoon activities start when you're ready, although we suggest you follow the advice of the guides, who know how and when to experience the best of the bush. Walks are encouraged (12+ years) to discover the smaller stuff. Kids are welcome on drives, though babysitters can be arranged (extra cost).
Teeming with wildlife, this easily accessible portion of the Kruger is a favourite among safari-goers.
