Just off the main road in El Chalten, Hosteria El Puma is one of the most charming lodges around town, offering amazing comfort and a down-to-earth atmosphere. It might not be overly fancy, but the lodge has been very well thought out and, owned by a mountain guide, it's ideal for travellers who enjoy nature and the outdoors. On top of that, the service is outstanding, the laid-back and welcoming vibe is soothing and the location, right next to the start of many of the park’s trails, is unbeatable. If you’re not one for overly ritzy, resort-style hotels, Hosteria El Puma is calling your name.

The lodge is nestled against the sides of the slopes that lead to the Fitz Roy and beyond, and is surrounded by charming gardens. Common areas are simple yet inviting, and full of warm tones, and there's a small lounge where guests can sit in front of the fire and enjoy a glass of wine after a day of hiking. In the dining area, the breakfast buffet features mountains of fresh fruit, pastries and eggs to order. The team looking after you is bend-over-backwards helpful, so don’t hesitate to ask for a packed breakfast if you have an early departure.
There’s a total of 17 standard and superior rooms, all following the Hosteria’s simple and minimalist décor and cosy ambience. The beds are large and comfortable, and the bathrooms are spacious and come complete with a hairdryer, shower, a bath and toiletries - the bath salts are bliss for tired leg muscles! Superior rooms are a bit bigger and add a private patio as well as a minibar, which can be quite handy for storing trekking supplies.
As one would expect in the hiking capital of Argentina, the activities all centre around - you guessed it - hiking! Although Hosteria El Puma doesn’t offer any guided excursions or activities, the lodge’s privileged location means you’re close to many of the main trail heads, including the Laguna de los Tres. And the incredibly friendly team is always ready to answer any and all questions you might have about trekking, as well as tips on where to start your walks.
The location is just fantastic: off the main road for a quieter atmosphere but close enough to be convenient - and it's just so close to those trails.
If the rain or wind moves in, there’s no better place to wait it out than by the cosy fireplace in the living room. Add a hot chocolate and you might wish the storm lasts a little longer...
The hotel is all about uncomplicated comfort. If flatscreen TVs, indulgent spas or a fine dining restaurant are part of your dream accommodation, you might want to keep looking.
