The property

Decorated in murals of intricately painted elephants and black rattan chairs - and with views of the Sigiriya Rock Fortress - enjoy seven courses of Sri Lankan and pan-Asian cuisine at Apsara. Next to the pool, the relaxed Sulang cafe has a spacious terrace, bulbous red columns and a view of the river. With murals inspired by the aged frescoes, the intimate and rustic Grafitti Bar is a lovely spot to enjoy a cocktail! Relax with a book at the library overlooking a tranquil lotus pond or let your cares melt away at the Island Spa.

The rooms

With woven reed walls and thatched roofs, each villa is named after its distinct setting, ranging from the smallest Garden Dwellings to stilted Water Dwellings built on a lake of lotus blossoms. The luxury, double-storey Forest Dwellings are decked out with a private pool, large living area and an al fresco sunken bath. Dotted across 28 acres, each villa has a king-size bed draped in sheer netting, roll-down 'doors' and open-air showers. Peaceful and close to nature, you might even hear the distant trumpet of an elephant from your timber deck.

Activities

Enjoy walks across Vil Uyana's lush grounds where you could spot crocodiles soaking in the marshes or nocturnal meanders in search of the loris. Just minutes away from the resort, hike to see the historic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an impressive granite monument that houses the famous Sigiriya frescoes. Visit the tranquil Dambulla Cave Temple, one of the most well-preserved complexes in Sri Lanka, or hike the Pidurangala Rock where you'll find the oldest brick reclining Buddha on the island. If you're visiting in season, venture out on a jeep drive to witness hundreds of elephants gathering at Minneriya National Park.
