About Nomad Kigelia Ruaha Camp

Take a walk on the wild side at this rustic yet elegant bush camp in Ruaha.
Unlike most temporary camps, Kigelia has a modicum of luxury that is in keeping with its external environment. Constructed of canvas to leave as little foot print on the land as possible, there is nothing but the relaxing necessities to distract you from the surrounding beauty. It has a remote setting under kigelia (sausage) trees and overlooking the Ifuguru Sand River. Enjoy the daily game drives with a worthwhile walking safari thrown into the mix for good measure. Wonderfully positioned for predator sightings, herds of elephants, buffalo, giraffe and much more. There is never a dull moment at this camp.

Property details

The property

A simple bedouin tented structure, the main area is romantically set beneath the boughs of the sausage trees. Housing both the lounging and dining spaces, it’s an inviting environment for mingling with other travellers and swapping safari stories. Throughout, there is a twist of African elegance and chic patterns and colours are tastefully woven into the neutral khakis. At one end is the dining table, surrounded by chairs and next to a well-stocked coffee station. Outside, there are plenty of foldout director’s chairs for midday relaxation and off to one side is the campfire, a communal spot for a customary aperitif in the evening.

The rooms

The six large canvas tents are spread out in a linear pattern, away from the central camp. Blending into the bush seamlessly, each tent enjoys views of the dry river bed, a highway for the local wildlife, elephants in particular. Internally there is an elegant minimalism, with mesh windows, hand woven carpets and a double or twin beds with soft linen. The en-suite bathroom comes with bucket showers, plenty of hot water and an eco-flush toilet.

Activities

Morning and afternoon game drive is a great way to explore the incredible landscapes of the Ruaha National Park, providing the opportunity to follow lions or wild dogs on the hunt. Don’t waste anytime back at camp extending morning game drive into a full day of safari with a picnic. Walking safari takes a slower pace, stopping to appreciate the finer details missed by a noisy vehicle, relying on just your senses and an expertly trained guide, a thrill is sure to be had. Bush breakfasts and dinners out under the stars create a novelty that just can't be beat.

What you'll love

What you'll love

The ‘no frills, no fuss’ atmosphere. The camp is extremely safari-chic but the emphasis is really on the wildlife experience – and they’ve mastered it here.

Insiders Tip

Not every camp in Ruaha has a permit for night drives but Kigelia is one of them so wrap up warm, pack the sundowners, and head out to see what you can find after dark…
Something to think about

Something to think about

The camp quite literally blends into the surrounding bush and unsuspecting wildlife will often pass between the tents. There are radios in every room so you’ll be told if there’s anything outside, but if you’re nervous about things that go bump in the night, be warned!
