Londolozi (a Zulu word meaning "protector of living things") is a private game reserve in the heart of the larger Sabi Sand Reserve, and is run by the Varty family, well known in the field of conservation pioneering. Of its five camps, child-friendly and elegantly comfortable Londolozi Founders is tucked beneath ancient ebony and matumi trees on the banks of the Sand River. Imagine waking to the evocative call of the African fish eagle before setting off on a private game drive to explore this enormous wilderness filled with the Big Five, especially cats, antelope, zebra and hundreds of birds.
Venture to the thatched communal area for meals (simple but delicious cuisine with buffet breakfasts so fabulous you won't be able to resist seconds). There are comfortable seating areas, a well-stocked bar, a shaded deck on which to relax with a drink and watch the animal cavalcade, a spa and a nearby gym.
You're assured a peaceful stay in one of Londolozi Founders' 10 intimate chalets, reached from the main area via winding paths. Furnished in classic safari style, all have huge mahogany beds, deep leather couches, military chests, safari lamps, full bathrooms with a view and a riverside lounge sala. Rise to the haunting call of the African fish eagle, chill on the deck as you watch the animals meander past and escape the afternoon heat in your private plunge pool.
Morning and late afternoon game drives focus on tracking the wildlife, whether you're interested in seeing it all or want to focus on a single species, such as rhino or leopard. Visit between May and July to enjoy a bush walk, with breakfast or a picnic in the wilderness. Look out for the 450-odd species of birds. Or try catch-and-release fishing. When the action is over, take part in a yoga session, have a massage. For children, there are special programmes to teach them about the natural world.
The leopards. Londolozi's famous resident cats have been documented for decades, and with Shangaan trackers whose skills border on supernatural, your chances of a close encounter are about as good as they get anywhere on the continent.
Attend a complimentary yoga class to centre mind and body. Even if yoga isn't your thing, the deck, which is built in the tranquil shade of an ebony tree half a millennium old, is worth a visit.
Founder's caters for children of all ages, so while ideal for families, maybe consider other options if you're looking for a quieter getaway.
A safari that surpasses every expectation awaits in this vast wilderness just west of the Kruger National Park.
