About Mantana Tented Camp

A hidden gem overlooking lush bush, rugged hills and a lake that shimmers
Some 250 kilometres south of Kampala is Lake Mburo National Park, home to many antelope species, buffalo, zebra, croc, hippo, leopard, hyena and a rich birdlife (including the rare, prehistoric-looking shoebill). It is here, overlooking the lake from the slopes of a hill called Rwamahungu, that you'll find Mantana Mburo. This small, simple camp, with just nine tents, may not offer luxury or haute cuisine, but it's the perfect place to stay if you're looking for a comfortable bed, meals that are well cooked and filling, helpful service, gorgeous views and a rich animal and birdlife on your doorstep.

Property details

The property

The lounge, dining area and bar are housed in a soaring stone and thatch structure on a raised wooded platform, with stunning views across the bush to Lake Mburo. Meals are simple but adequate (specify special dietary requirements when booking), and are served under the stars or in the dining room beneath lanterns (power is solar). Comfy sofas are perfect for relaxing with a drink before dinner while taking in the views.

The rooms

From the main area, gravel paths lead to nine well-spaced tents. All are set on platforms, with views across the open acacia woodland or facing the lake. The furnishings are simple but comfortable – the beds are twin or queen-sized, the en-suite bathroom has a flush toilet, and the hand basins are supplied with hot and cold water. Want a hot shower? They're bush-style here, so simply request hot water. Outside, a private veranda is perfect for relishing the scenery.

Activities

Lake Mburo is part of a 50-kilometre-long wetland system, with vegetation ranging from woodland to papyrus swamp, so the animal life in the park is abundant. Don't expect the giants – there are no elephants – but the plains game and birdlife (some 350 species) are superb. Take game drives, guided bush and birding walks and lake safaris, visit the nearby fishing village or try your hand with a line. Discuss and book the activities when making your reservation.
