There’s not much in the way of big game but the plains game more than makes up for it with Burchell’s zebra and antelope skittering across the grasslands and topi and eland drinking nonchalantly at the lake-side. There’s also a magnificent array of birdlife in the forest areas and the park is the top spot in Uganda for nature walks and horse-riding. Conveniently located to make a superb stopover destination on the way to the gorillas in Bwindi, Lake Mburo is also really rather excellent in it’s own way, so go on, stay for a few days and you won’t be disappointed.

What to do in Lake Mburo

Nestled in the rolling hills of western Uganda, this compact park offers a varied safari experience without the long drives. Head out on a morning game drive across savannah plains to spot zebra herds, warthogs, and the only impalas you'll find in the country. When you're ready for a change of pace, join a guided bush walk to track wildlife on foot and experience the landscape from a different perspective. For something a bit special, the horseback safaris allow you to ride alongside wildlife through the acacia-dotted terrain. As the day cools, take to the water on a boat cruise across the lake, where hippos and crocodiles make their home and various birds circle overhead.
