About Masiya's Camp

A unique and nature-focused camp within the wildlife-filled Thornybush Reserve.
Named in honour of the late Wilson Masiya, one of South Africa's master trackers whose fearless spirit and deep connection to the wilderness inspired guests for decades, Masiya's Camp hopes to embody these very traits. But, it's also driven by an appreciation for the finer things in life including meals prepared to perfection – and served on your private deck, if you like – and delightful interiors with plenty of style. Sustainability is also a major factor at Masiya's Camp, using an innovative energy system and phasing out plastic water bottles. Its sister lodge, Royal Malewane, is often referred to as the 'Harvard of the Bush' because of the guides' unparalleled knowledge, and Masiya's Camp is no different.

Property details

The property

Tucked amongst a pocket of greenery, the camp's main area is fronted by floor-to-ceiling glass doors that invite the outside in. True to Royal Malewane's culinary philosophy, meals are prepared with the freshest, seasonal ingredients, and the menu champions the incredible flavours of the region. An interactive kitchen, pizza oven and braai area invites guests to connect and at the heart of the camp is a vibrant bar adorned with the prettiest turquoise tiles and offering 360-degree views of the surroundings. During the day, spend your down time relaxing in the lounge or while away a few hours in the heated pool.

The rooms

Sitting beneath stretched rust-red canvas, there are just six suites, each one uniquely styled in a variety of hues and decor. Combining the exotic and the traditional, you'll find Persian rugs, tailored furnishings, bespoke Indian doors and plenty of colourful artwork. Ensconced by floor-to-ceiling windows, each tent is 100 square metres in size with plush king-sized beds (they can be split into two three-quarters), a hidden pop-up TV, ceiling speakers, aircon, underfloor heating and wifi. The suites all open onto a private deck with a lounge and dining space, sala and heated plunge pool.

Activities

From Masiya's Camp, you'll have the chance to explore the incredibly diverse landscapes of Thornybush in the Greater Kruger region. Embark on game drives (including specialised photographic safaris) and guided bush walks, keeping your eyes peeled for leopard and African wild dogs. You can also delve into the reserve's conservation work at Royal Malewane's Conservation and Research Centre, the Mololoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre or go on a helicopter patrol with the anti-poaching K9 unit. Golfers can tee off at Africa's most exclusive bushveld course, Leopard's Creek.
