A stalwart of a spot in Botswana's biggest little town.

The still dusty but increasingly more modern town of Maun serves as the gateway to Botswana's Okavango Delta. From here, travellers launch onward to the myriad camps that pepper the region. Though it's often only an obligatory pause before the real adventure starts, Maun does have a funny kind of charm, with friendly, well-seasoned locals who don't beat around the bush. Maun Lodge is a surprisingly sophisticated, mid-sized hotel on the Thamalakane River, just a few minutes from the heart of town and makes a very pleasant night or two en route to the wilder places.

The property

Forget bucket showers - the impeccably-maintained facilities at Maun Lodge offer a much-needed reprieve for tired travellers. You'll have everything you need, from an on-the-ball concierge service and a decent restaurant to a well-equipped gym. The interior courtyard has a lovely thatched dining area, right next to a glistening swimming pool, and although it's not far from the heart of town, the lodge is surrounded by low grasslands and lush, tree-filled gardens which are relaxing and serene.

The rooms

There are five different room classes here to suit many styles. The Riverfront Rooms are the most plush, with all the mod-cons, from air-conditioning to wifi and satellite TV - and all have lovely verandas overlooking the river. The two Presidential and Executive Suites have the added plus of king-sized beds but the 88 Standard Hotel Rooms are perfectly-well furnished too. The 12 budget chalets are great for families with two three-quarter beds and a sleeper couch, and two twin chalets with three-quarter beds.

Activities

If you're spending a night or two in transit, your stay in Maun can be as colourful or low-key as you like. Ask a friendly staff member for advice on the best restaurants and watering holes and scenic sun-down spots. The town has a surprisingly international community of people who work in the safari industry, or are simply drawn to the wilderness and there are some real hidden gems around. If you'd prefer to stay in, then the on-site restaurant serves up a great burger and chips and the pool is always open for a dip.
