The central main area is open on three sides and surrounded by a forest of jackalberry trees, including two giants that have made their way into the lounge itself! Views are of the pretty, papyrus-lined channels and the decor features locally made art and handicrafts. A jetty juts out into the river, where you'll arrive by boat. There's also a small pool, perfect for splashing in during the hot summer months, and a curio shop from which profits go directly back into the local community.
Totally traditional and very spacious, the seven brick-and-thatch chalets are built on raised platforms in the lush riverine forest. All have private decks with views of the channel, and the treehouse goes one better with 360 degree views through the open sides. Inside, you'll find double or twin beds draped with large mosquito nets, a couple of wicker armchairs and a writing desk. The open-plan, ensuite bathrooms are simple but there's oodles of hot water for the shower.
The waterways around the lodge offer some of the best freshwater fly and lure fishing in Botswana. Various species of tilapia, barbel (catfish) and of course, tiger, are all available on a catch-and-release basis. September and October sees the barbel run, during which thousands of the fish migrate northwards to spawn. There's also full-day trips to Tsodilo Hills, the cultural heart of the San Bushmen, and birders should look out for wattled cranes and the lesser jacana. And the best way to soak up the peace and beauty? On a slow cruise in a mokoro.
