About Ramathra Fort

A shimmering lake and miles of forestland is your backyard at this historic fort.
Ramathra Fort looks rather mythical from its perch on the hillside. Surrounded by ancient stone walls complete with fairytale turrets, the 350-year old palace is a collection of leafy courtyards, tented lounges and beautiful painted ceilings. Despite its grand outer shell, the rooms aren't particularly ornate, but have an authentic, homely style. Overlooking Kalisil Lake, there's plenty of birdlife to spot and the small, quaint villages nearby complete the scene. Far away from the big cities of Rajasthan, the fort and its countryside views are the main attraction. After a day of exploring or enjoying a little R&R back at the fort, sunset from the ramparts is a fitting end.

Property details

The property

Behind the fort's ancient walls, you'll find a classy but simple dining room with woven rugs and soft lighting, where you can enjoy meals prepared in the family kitchen. In the tented 'wing', you can also dine on a canopied terrace or under the stars, heavenly. There are plenty of places to relax on Ramthra's many turrets; toast the day with drinks at the bar, enjoy a full body massage on rooftop daybeds, or spend time reclining in an open-air lounge.

The rooms

In the main building, the en-suite Deluxe Rooms open onto a courtyard and come with a queen size bed and colourful living area by the jharoka-style windows. The Luxury Suites have a four-poster king size bed, minibar, a rustic bathroom and lounge area with a fireplace in sandy and powder-blue tones. A special feature is the private terrace with an open-air bathtub in pink sandstone. All rooms come with air con, wardrobe and tea/coffee makers. The fort also has six luxury tents with teak furnishings, woven rugs, a desk and tea/coffee facilities. The private patio looks out over a dining area, canopied lounges and a fire pit.

Activities

The lake is Ramathra's shimmering drawcard so a boating session is in order. Search for crocodile dens (and their residents) and enjoy the flutter of birdlife from darting kingfishers to the red-headed sarus cranes - plus, you can add a picnic on the island to your day out. On a jeep safari across the Daang plateau, visit tranquil cave temples and Chuaki Gorge, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like blue bull, wolves and the rare sloth bear. You can also enjoy a cooking demo on wood fire chullas back at the fort.
