In the heart of one of the oldest medinas in the Arab world, Riad Fes takes pride in telling its history. The Andalusion patio sits round a pool adorned with candles, while the Baroque patio uses the riad's original decor and makes a perfectly-private spot for dinner under the fig trees. Gayza restaurant is beautifully designed, as are its menus, which feature Fassi dishes passed down for generations, as well as international fare. Signature dishes include roasted lamb with onion jam and desserts of Moulay Idriss nougat. Magic!
The rooms retain a rich, classic style with zellige floors, Carrara marble bathrooms (with African black soap and clay for your own 'spa' treatments), and Moroccan antiques. Suites are especially lovely and are adorned with crystal chandeliers on finely-carved ceilings and hand-chiseled stucco walls. Most also have a private terrace overlooking the medina. Each room has a sitting area with a satellite TV, Nespresso machine, and a minibar. La Royal Suite is the most extravagant and far more spacious than most in Fez.
Famed as Morocco's spiritual capital, Fez is a maze of ancient streets and historic sights. On a wander through the medina, visit the library at one of the oldest universities in the world, peruse the artefacts at Dar Batha palace-turned-museum, and marvel at the medieval Chouara Tannery - take a scarf to cover your nose though. In the fresh air, enjoy the ultimate view from the city ramparts or a picnic in a Caidale tent on the hillside and further afield, there are excursions to the Valley of the Monkeys, hikes up Mount Zalagh, and wine tasting in Meknes.
Take a step back in time, and let the culture and spirituality of Fez beguile you.
