About Wilderness Sabyinyo

Go ape with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda at this classic and comfortable lodge.
At Wilderness Sabyinyo, in the foothills of Rwanda's Virunga range, you're just a short trek away from mountain gorilla territory, home to the world's most endangered great apes – the same giants that the late Dian Fossey introduced to the world. Just 790 or so of the gorillas remain, so an encounter is a definite privilege. Surrounded by lush vegetation and mist-crowned volcanoes, the lodge is the perfect place from which to start your guided trek. It offers comfortable accommodation, good food and happy staff. Go now, if you can (it's not a cheap destination) and fulfil a dream.

Property details

The property

The communal lodge building and the cottages have been beautifully constructed and furnished to make sure you're comfortable. In the main building are several reception rooms, all very welcoming with fireplaces and big squidgy sofas. There's also a restaurant and bar, a library and games room and, outside, well-maintained gardens.

The rooms

The lodge's eight cottages are well spaced, so you can sit back and gaze at the dramatic volcanic range in peace. Each cottage is spacious, with a cosy sitting room with a fireplace, a home-from-home bedroom, a dressing room and a large bathroom with a bath and shower with hot and cold running water (there's 24-hour electricity). The cottages also have a sheltered balcony designed for relaxing, enjoying breakfast or losing yourself in a book or the scenery.

Activities

Gorilla treks are clearly the prime reason for visiting, but other interesting outings are also offered. Hike to see the playful golden monkeys that are endemic to the high-altitude forests of the Volcanoes Park; explore the seven-hectare Sabyinyo property to see the 40-plus bird species that shelter here; investigate the surroundings and local villages on foot or mountain bike (with a guide); or visit the nearby twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo and the ecologically important Buhanga Sacred Forest.

What you'll love

Sabyinyo is Rwanda’s first-ever community-owned lodge and the emphasis is firmly on the local communities and conservation (as well as great food and service!).
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Make time to visit the final resting place of Dian Fossey, who was murdered in 1985 and whose grave lies beside her favourite gorilla Digit and 20 other mountain gorillas. The walk is long (60 to 90 minutes), but the site is intensely moving.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The lodge is at an altitude of 2500 metres which can be challenging – and there are some very steep steps in the grounds!
