The Jalakara is built on the site of a former banana and betel nut plantation. Surrounded by lush rainforests, the views down to the glassy sea and squeaky sand are staggering. Traditional techniques and materials were used in creating this magical space, and craftsmen and designers from across India worked closely with owners Mark and Atalanta to realise their vision. The result is this exceptionally beautiful spot that manages to fulfil all the ideas you have of an island getaway, yet still fresh and funky.
The are three rooms, three suites and one villa to choose from and each has its own unique personality and style. Choose the Garden Suite for an alfresco baths and afternoons in the private garden, the Tower Room for your own lily pond and a fluttering hammock or the glass-walled Skyroom for the best views. Across the board, beautiful textiles and block-printed fabrics bring a pop of colour to the tranquil white-washed walls and antiques give a sense of history and place.
The emphasis here is definitely on relaxing but if you want to do more, then Havelock Island is your oyster. In the water, kayak or snorkel in the mangrove creeks, scuba dive with the cast of Finding Nemo, or take out a boat and watch the sunrise on one side of the island before scooting over to the other for sunset. On land, enrol in a cooking class, indulge in the spa or find a lounger and do. Not. Move.
A dreamland archipelago that ranks as one of the most remote, and utterly beautiful, places on earth.
