The world’s northernmost capital, and a fantastically off-kilter one at that, Reykjavik has been taking expectations and casting them aside since its early days as a Norwegian Viking settlement. The city’s main hub (everyone calls it the 101) is very walkable and in the space of a few hours, you can visit the Skólavörðustígur, the Pride-inspired street lined with rainbow-hued shops and cafes, pick up new creations by Icelandic designers along Laugavegur, and order ‘one with everything’ at the beloved Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hotdog stand. Join the locals for a soak in one of the geothermal pools and they’ll likely tell you the same! A little further, there’s, Grandi, a collection of old fish-processing warehouses now unabashedly cool art galleries and museums and the Old Harbour, where boat trips depart to spot humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and, at the right time of year, puffins.

Reykjavik is totally unconventional and absolutely brilliant. Where else would you find an elf school rather than McDonald’s (there are none, by the way)? Plus, it has a seriously impressive music calendar.
A short ferry ride away, peaceful Viðey Island is a combination of historic ruins, excellent views and some unique artworks and installations including Yoko Ono’s ‘Imagine Peace Tower’.
Even in the best months, don’t expect to see the Northern Lights from the city itself. And we’re not joking when we say you’ll likely experience four seasons in a single day.
