Andrafiamena Safari Trips & Tours

A place for nature-lovers and scenery-seekers to step well and truly away from the madding crowds.
A relatively new stop on the Madagascar circuit, the Andrafiamena protected area lies about 100 kilometres south of Diego Suarez and is a melee of deciduous, dry forest, caves and limestone formations. The definition of off-the-beaten-track, this is the place for nature lovers looking for a spot where truly, not many have been before. There are several hikes of varying lengths and difficulties to get stuck into, including the prettily named Natural Pool Circuit and Black Sifaka Circuit, all of which wind through rolling scenery and offer the chance to see the all-black Perrier’s sifaka, one of the world’s 25 most endangered primates.
Things to do

What to do in Andrafiamena

If you're craving a slice of Madagascar that hasn't been Instagrammed to death, the Andrafiamena-Andavakoera Protected Area is your ticket to genuine wilderness thrills. Barely a blip on most travelers' radars, this northern gem is a jumbled playground of subhumid forests, karst landscapes, and those eerily beautiful 'tsingy' limestone formations that Madagascar does so well. You'll find yourself lacing up hiking boots for guided treks with names straight out of an adventure novel – perhaps stalking through dappled forest light on the hunt for the critically endangered Perrier's sifaka, an all-black lemur so rare that spotting one feels like finding a living ghost. Bird nerds can tick off dozens of species, including some that barely exist elsewhere, while geology buffs can scramble through ancient caves that feel untouched by human hands. The real magic, though, happens when meeting communities who co-manage this wilderness – their connection to the land offering a masterclass in sustainable living that puts our recycling efforts to shame. Plant a tree, learn traditional practices, or simply sit in wonder at a forest where, genuinely, so few travelers have ventured before.
