What to do in Lake Eyasi

It’s no surprise if you’ve never heard of Lake Eyasi. Hidden away in northern Tanzania, the area isn’t known for its wildlife, but is instead famous for its history and the intriguing communities who live here. Whilst visiting the lake and its surroundings, you’ll have the chance to learn about the Hadzabe and Datoga tribes, who have lived on this land for thousands of years. Join a Hadzabe guide on a hunting (solely for food) and gathering expedition, and learn how to operate a bow and arrow from the masters. Visit a Datoga village where their skilled silversmiths create iron tips, knives and spears, which are used to barter with the Hadzabe community. Though, you might like to pick up some handmade jewellery! The lake is mostly dry between June and October, but after the rains have fallen, it is a hub of birdlife including storks, pelicans and pink flamingos. Some lodges offer game drives but most of your exploring will be done on foot with an expert guide.
