Revered as the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini – a designated UNESO World Heritage Site and the home of Buddha for 29 years – is slow, peaceful and totally serene. At the centre of it all is the Sacred Garden, home to the Maya Devi Temple (dedicated to Buddha’s mother) and the Pushkarini Sacred Pond, whilst the wider area includes monastic zones where countries from across the Buddhist world have built temples and monasteries in their distinct style. The entire area is a contemplative contrast to the tiny lanes and bustling squares of the Kathmandu Valley and even if you’re not travelling for pilgrimage, it’s a place for reflection and easy days, gazing at the intricate architecture and tuning into your spirituality.

A world away from Nepal's mountain drama, Lumbini is a place of quiet reverence – the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who would become the Buddha, and one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites on earth. The Sacred Garden anchors everything, with the Maya Devi Temple marking the precise spot of his birth and the ancient Ashoka Pillar standing as proof of devotees who came before you, some 2,300 years ago. Beyond the garden, the Monastic Zone sprawls with temples donated by Buddhist nations from Japan to Germany, each reflecting their own architectural traditions – it's a fascinating study in how one philosophy travels across cultures. The Eternal Peace Flame flickers at the heart of it all, lit in 1986 and burning ever since. Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the crowds thin and the atmosphere feels truly contemplative.
Lumbini is (for the moment) tranquil and relatively untouched and the cultural significance of being in such a profoundly spiritual area is awe-inspiring.
Many visit on a day trip, but stay overnight and explore early or late in the cool, when the complex feels especially peaceful.
The temple complex is open and very exposed, so a hat and lots of water are essentials, especially if you’re only visiting for the day.
