What to do in Nyika

Ascend to Africa's most wonderfully unexpected wilderness, where rolling 'whaleback' hills stretch as far as the eye can see—and sometimes float above the clouds at a rather impressive 8,000 feet. This isn't your typical African safari landscape; think more Scottish Highlands with zebras, or the Alps with leopards lounging about. During the rainy season, orchids burst forth in a spectacular display that would make any botanist weak at the knees—over 200 species if you're counting. Keep your binoculars handy for the Denham's bustard strutting through the grasslands, though it's the massive herds of eland and roan antelope that steal the show, gathering in numbers that would make the Serengeti jealous. Mountain bike across trails where elephants occasionally lumber up from the lowlands (clearly seeking better views), or trek to hidden waterfalls and mysterious 'magic lakes' that could have been plucked from a fantasy novel. As dusk settles, listen for the cackling of hyenas while scanning the forests near Chelinda Lodge—home to one of central Africa's densest leopard populations, though these spotted cats clearly prefer to keep their admirers guessing.

Safari

For the love of the wild places
It’s hard to describe what a safari really feels like… Every day brings something unexpected and no two are ever the same, from the wildlife you spot to the magnificent scenery around every corner. Of course, Africa is the home of the safari and each country has something unique to offer. You could walk your way through South Luangwa in Zambia, ride horseback through Kenya’s Laikipia plateau, marvel at the Great Migration thundering across the Serengeti, or game drive through the Kruger in search of the Big Five…. and much more. Whatever you choose, one thing’s for sure: you’ll never look at nature the same way again.

Wildlife

All creatures great and small
The thrill of catching a glimpse of a swishing tail or the flash of an eye, knowing you’re the first human they have seen in a while – or for the very first time - is a truly unforgettable moment. One moment, you’re scanning the horizon, and the next, an elephant ambles into view or a monkey swings overhead. It might be a whale breaching off the coast, or a pangolin scurrying across the sand, but whatever it is, it’s real, and it’s unforgettable. At Timbuktu, we’ll get you to the right place at the right time for the best wildlife encounters - you just need to have your binoculars at the ready.

Active

Keep your heart rate high – Timbuktu style
While we’re advocates for some good R&R, we also believe in adding some adventure to any trip. Across our multitude of destinations, there is always the opportunity to get ‘active’ and explore on foot, bicycle, horse or camelback, hot air balloon or microlight (and many more). From treks through Chilean Patagonia to walking safaris in Zambia, kitesurfing in Zanzibar to canoeing around Halong Bay, there is an endless array of activities to dive into.
