Discover Namibia with Meg

It was one memorable road trip

Meg arrived in Namibia with one goal: to be utterly amazed – and what followed surpassed her every expectation.

Namibia roadtrip

“After a night in Swakopmund, my group and I hit the road, driven by guiding extraordinaire, Franco. And after the long and incredibly scenic drive to the Skeleton Coast, I experienced one of the major highlights of the entire trip – meeting Dr Phillip ‘Flip’ Stander, the founder of the Desert Lion Conservation and a true hero of mine.”

“This was swiftly followed by a second highlight: Shipwreck Lodge. With cabins designed to resemble the famous wrecks along the Skeleton Coast (with a serious upgrade in the luxury department), you’re in a prime spot for enjoying the ethereal fog rolling in from the Atlantic and the feeling of being totally removed from the world. The next day was filled with adventure, from ATV rides to sandboarding down the dunes, and a visit to the iconic Dunedin Wreck – with sundowners, of course.”

Namibia roadtrip

“In the next few days, we would travel the length of northern Namibia, listening to classic songs, hearing all about the unique and changing landscape, and spotting the country’s hidden ‘Stone Men’ like a life-sized game of Where’s Waldo.”

Namibia roadtrip

“Next up was Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, which rises from the rust-red sand like a Grecian settlement. Overlooking the Puros Conservancy, it was designed to be all about the views and I could have easily spent days in the pool, soaking it all up. The most incredible moments at Okahirongo were spent with the Himba tribe where, through our interpreter and guide, we were able to learn about their daily lives.”

Namibia roadtrip

“After winding our way into Damaraland, we arrived at the lovely Camp Doros, just in time for a dip in their teeny-tiny but refreshing pool. Working side-by-side with the Save the Rhino Trust, we were thrilled with the chance to track desert-adapted black rhino on foot, always keeping our distance to ensure they remain unhabituated.”

“Our second stop in Damaraland was Onduli Ridge, which is built to be entirely tucked away amongst the boulders, but with the most staggering views. They easily roll your bed out onto the deck to sleep under the stars and I requested it both nights – the experience was pure magic.”

Namibia roadtrip

“The Huab River Valley and its surrounds had historic rains so it was full of greenery and life, which made our search for desert-adapted elephant even more incredible. We also had the chance to explore the Twyfelfontein rock art ‘gallery’, discovering the amazing history of the region.”

Namibia roadtrip

“After a truly dreamy trip, it was time to head Windhoek, but not before stopping for a brew and a dance at a local bar. Fun was had by all! Road tripping across the country does involve some long days in the vehicle, but allows you to experience the ‘real’ Namibia with the kind of unique and off-the-cuff experiences that make it a true adventure.”

Fancy doing a similar thing? This trip is a fantastic place to start – with the added bonus of a safari in Etosha.
