Best time to visit Tanzania

Tanzania, like most of East Africa, has quite specific dry and wet seasons. The main dry season runs from July to September (largely considered the best time to go – plenty of sunny days, blue skies, and good wildlife viewing), before a short rainy season in November and at the beginning of December. Handily, the rains stop for Christmas and much of January and February, making Tanzania an excellent winter sun destination. The long rains then come in March and last until May. Many camps close at this time of year but if you do go on one of our Tanzania safari holidays, you’ll be rewarded with emerald green landscapes and fantastic Great Migration viewing in the Serengeti (and incidentally, whatever time of year you visit, you will always be able to see the migration somewhere in the Serengeti as they move in a circular pattern).

Don't be put off by the odd afternoon thunderstorm (which gives way to the most breathtaking and dramatic sunsets). Travelling in green\shoulder season means fewer crowds, lots of gorgeous baby animals, and reserves pretty much all to yourselves! "

  • Tarangire and Ruaha are green and in bloom with migratory birds present in full breeding colours

  • A great time to explore the coral reefs and exotic fish, with a water clarity of 25 meters or more in Zanzibar

  • During this time of year lodge selection is important in Tanzania, if you want to avoid the crowds

  • Insect numbers have increased, be sure to have your repellent at the ready

Tanzania in February

  • This is the short dry season that precedes the heavy rains starting in March, with relatively high year round temperatures, expect a handful of rainy afternoons in this month

  • The perfect time to go and view the newborns, as well as the predators that hunt them

  • The very high sunshine hours, provide great photographic conditions across Tanzania

  • There are more insects during the wet season, so have your repellent at the ready

Tanzania in March

Mixed Season — a quieter time to visit

  • The arrival of the longer wet season, temperatures are still hot with humidity potential playing a factor in daytime comfort

  • During the 'Emerald season', plants are in bloom, vegetation is thick and grasses can be long, making wildlife a little more difficult to spot

  • Game viewing in the ngorongoro crater and central areas of the Serengeti are good year round with high game densities

  • Birding is particularly good in Ruaha and Tarangire during March

  • The Great Migration is best observed across the Seronera region in the central Serengeti

  • The best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater, if you don't mind the rain, with low tourist traffic leading to more intimate sightings

  • The rutting season (breeding season) in the Serengeti, sees testosterone levels climb, with the bulls, rams and stallions competing for the attentions of the opposite sex
