Horseback riding experiences

If you think you’ve done and seen it all, then how about swapping four wheels for four legs, and booking a horseback expedition through some of the world’s wildest places? Whether you’re an experienced equestrian or a nervous-but-keen beginner, there’s a riding experience out there for you. Of course, Africa is always at the top of our list for the sheer beauty of its landscapes but there is a myriad of other glorious spaces to explore from the pampas of Patagonia to the deserts of India. All that’s left to say is, giddy-up!

Explore the Stellenbosh vineyards on horseback

In the morning, you’ll meet your four-legged companion and stride out on a guided ride around the vineyards and estates of the Stellenbosh region. With the wind in your hair and the sweet smell of the flora in the air, there’s no better way to experience the beautiful countryside. You'll have a choice of horses and routes to suit your riding level, from fast-paced gallops along mountain passes to lingering walks through the orchards. You'll have worked up an appetite and after lunch in Stellenbosh, you'll have the chance to sample the area's finest wines. Bottoms up! If you're visiting in the warmer months (October to March), book a sunset ride when the Winelands are bathed in gold.

Gallop along Vilanculos beach on a horseback ride

Depending on your plans for the day, head out in the early morning or late afternoon to explore the dunes, rustic roads and beaches on horseback. In the category of unique activities, this ranks highly on our list. You'll get a feel for the natural rhythm of Mozambique as you navigate overgrown paths abuzz with birdlife, and canter past glassy lakes and across powdery white sand beaches. You could even go swimming with your horse and it doesn't much more magical than that. Of course, this activity is dependent on the weather and tides, but May to September is the best time to visit. Temperatures are hot but comfortable, with little chance of rain.

Go on a horseback safari in the Okavango Delta

Close your eyes and picture yourself cantering alongside a loping herd of giraffe while the reddening sun sinks behind the tall palms, casting a reflection across the flooded plains of the Central Okavango. On jeep safaris, the engine's hum creates an inevitable disconnect from the wildlife. However, approach the animals by horse (lead by your seasoned guide) and you become part of the scenery as they go about their business undisturbed, giving you unrivalled insight into their habits. Sit back in your saddle, allow the bathing elephants, splashing herds of lumbering buffalo, and nonchalantly grazing antelope to mesmerise you.
