About Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle

The only hotel inside the gates at Versailles, where a butler wakes you with a lantern

Louis XIV's finance ministers ran the royal accounts from this 1681 building, and the last of them, Jacques Necker, sat here working out how to bankroll the American Revolution (the street outside is still called Rue de l'Indépendance Américaine). It's now a hotel inside the gates of the Versailles estate, the only one of its kind. Airelles spent four years and a fortune putting the 18th century back: an 1788 inventory guided the furniture hunt, the staff wear period dress, and Alain Ducasse runs the kitchen. What you're paying for, really, is the palace after the crowds have gone home. Fourteen rooms, and that's the lot.

Property details

The property

With so few rooms, the salons are usually empty: gilt-framed mirrors, waxed parquet, replica chandeliers and chairs you're actually allowed to sit on. Lunch happens outside at La Table des Jardiniers, looking across the Orangerie and up the Cent Marches, and drinks at the Bar de la Chapelle run into the evening. Dinner is Ducasse, candlelit, served by staff in frock coats, starting with the Sun King's egg and caviar. Downstairs, the spa is all marble and Valmont oils. Afternoon tea arrives whether you asked for it or not.

The rooms

The grandest is the Necker Suite: four-metre ceilings, a canopied bed, a bathroom spread over two rooms and windows onto the Orangerie. Below that they get smaller but no less considered, with recreated 18th-century wallpapers (one marks the hot-air balloon that went up over Versailles in 1783), marble bathrooms, deep tubs and a butler who wakes you with baroque music. Technology hides in a box. Three suites take families of four. No televisions anywhere, which nobody seems to miss.

Activities

Mornings start before the gates open, when a buggy takes you down to the Trianons and Marie-Antoinette's hamlet with nobody else in sight. Row yourself along the Grand Canal (the boats are included), cycle the gravel avenues, or let us arrange horses along the water. Evenings belong to the private tours, and the guides change them nightly if you stay on. Children get the Royal Camp. Ask about the costume fitting if you're that way inclined. Paris is a half-hour train ride away, though you may not bother.

Why we love it

Why we love it

After closing, a guide walks you into the Hall of Mirrors and it's empty. Seventeen arches, 357 mirrors, and the sound of your own shoes. Nobody who's stood there has stopped talking about it.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

The underground pool runs on private slots, so claim yours at check-in. It's marble, frescoed and lit by candles, and looks rather less like a hotel pool than a very grand tomb.

Something to think about

Something to think about

The staff in 18th-century dress and the assigned-character banquet delight some people and make others want to hide behind the drapes. Dinner at Ducasse is charged on top of the room rate.
