Brach Paris is a five-star design hotel by Philippe Starck in the 16th arrondissement, the leafy, residential side of western Paris between the Trocadéro and the Bois de Boulogne. The Jardin du Ranelagh is a 10-minute walk, and since Parisians live here, the restaurant fills with locals as well as visitors. Behind a planted glass façade, Starck has turned a 1970s postal sorting office into a cabinet of curiosities. Thousands of art books, totems, sculptures and objects from around the world sit against warm wood, leather, marble and metal. If you’ve already done the gilded palaces, this is the next Paris stay to try.
In the first-floor lobby, kept for those staying, a painted canvas ceiling looks down on a crowd of totems. Downstairs, the Brach restaurant is open to everyone and gets lively, with communal tables, a mural that loops around the room and a 20-metre open kitchen where meat and seafood are cooked over fire. The chef’s menu is generous and Mediterranean. A cocktail bar and a pâtisserie share the ground floor; the first-floor terrace is thick with planting, and Clarins treatment suites sit beside the pools.
Rosewood, marble and fluted glass dress the rooms, which take in soft light through the façade and have antique objects here and there. Families can connect Superior and Deluxe rooms to the adjacent room. On the fifth and sixth floors, the six suites are laid out like private apartments, with 1930s furniture, books, and art, and each opens onto a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Paris. Several have a wooden Norwegian hot tub facing the Eiffel Tower.
Down in the Sports Club, styled on a 1930s boxing club, you can swim lengths of the 22-metre pool, then warm up in the hot pool and salt cave after a day on your feet.
If you’re in town between May and September, head up to the rooftop garden for a drink with the whole city spread around you.
Western Paris is residential, so the Louvre and Opéra are a metro or taxi ride rather than a stroll. Both are under 20 minutes away, though, and Rue de la Pompe station is about 400 metres from the door.
