In the heart of the 8th arrondissement, right on the iconic Golden Triangle, the Elysia is in one of Paris' swankiest neighbourhoods, and it definitely lives up to expectations. A traditional Hausmann building on the outside, the inside is a temple of sophistication in various tones of cream, gold and bronze. Soothing, serene and utterly delightful. With only 39 rooms, the hotel feels eminently private and the service is outstanding. When you're not exploring, make use of the underground wellness area, complete with sauna, steam room and a hot tub, or enjoy tea in the exquisite Salon Bamboo - how very Parisian...

Hausmannian, but with a contemporary difference, the Elysia is bright, airy and contemporary but the old art-deco touches, from the mosaic flooring to the wrought-iron lift and the staircase peppered with stained-glass windows are all still evident. Le Bayadère is the restaurant highlight - think oyster and shiitake ravioli and sea bass with lime thyme and courgette flowers - but Salon Bambou calls for tea at 4pm, or a pre-dinner something. The spa, on the basement level, has a compact but good menu of treatments.
Rooms and suites range from cosy Classics up to the roomier Signature Suite, the only one with a balcony looking over the rooftops. There's grey and gold throughout, marble in the bathrooms, mouldings overhead, moiré carpet underfoot, and in several rooms, a marble fireplace. The headboards, however, are the real event: each a François Mascarello painting of a Paris garden, bridge or rooftop, made just for that room. There's also Nespresso machines, soundproofed windows, blackout drapes, and Ladurée macaroons waiting to welcome you.
The location of the Elysia is fabulous. A 10 minute walk takes you to the Champs-Élysées in one direction and the Galeries Lafayette in the other, which should cover most shopping ambitions. The Arc de Triomphe is mere minutes away, and the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d'Art Moderne share a building fifteen minutes west. Further afield, the Eiffel Tower will take you 25 minutes on foot, winding through quintessential neighbourhoods and tree-lined avenues. Otherwise, the closest metro is five minutes away, putting (almost) everything on your doorstep.
Tea in Salon Bambou, surrounded by Macassar ebony, hand-painted straw marquetry screens and the prettiest pastries you've ever seen.
A handful of rooms come with a private jacuzzi, but only on request and never at the last minute. Ask when you book!
It's a narrow Haussmannian building, so the lift is tight and some rooms come out darker than the photographs suggest.
