About Ham Yard Hotel

Independent shops, a sculpture, a bowling alley - all before you check in.

Soho isn't where you'd expect to find a moment's peace, which is rather the point of Ham Yard. Step off the noisy streets and you land in a tree-filled pedestrian courtyard ringed with small independent boutiques, a Tony Cragg bronze at its heart - a pocket of calm most Londoners never know is there. Inside, Ham Yard is a riot of creativity: an art collection on every wall and interiors layered with the confident, eclectic eye of designer Kit Kemp, all wrapped in the sociable spirit of the West End it calls home. Playful, grown-up, and unmistakably itself.

Property details

The property

Downstairs invites you to stay put. The Library, lined with books and run on an honesty bar, is built for an idle hour; the Drawing Room is where you'd take a pot of tea and a long conversation. The restaurant leans into the seasons, and the bartenders make their own syrups and bitters, so the cocktails taste of somewhere specific. On a fine day, the oyster cart trundles out and the whole place spills happily outdoors.

The rooms

The rooms are where the look really lets loose. Each is its own composition - bold colour, layered pattern, fabric-covered walls and a headboard you'll want to photograph - and yet they stay warm and easy to live in rather than precious. Beds are big and properly comfortable; the bathrooms a generous, characterful affair. For longer stays or family trips, the residences throw in sitting rooms and kitchens. Few London rooms can match it for personality.

Activities

You're slap in the middle of the West End, so the hardest part is choosing. The theatres are a short walk, with Carnaby Street's boutiques and Regent Street's bigger names just beyond. Spend a morning at the Royal Academy or the National Gallery, an afternoon grazing Soho's cafés and record shops, an evening wherever the night takes you - then a short stroll back to your own quiet corner of it all.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The art (it's everywhere). Bold, original, and contemporary, and hung with conviction rather than to match the cushions. You could spend hours just working your way around the walls.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Below the hotel hides the Croc - an original 1950s bowling alley and bar. Gather a few people after dinner, roll a couple of frames, and you'll have the most fun you never planned on.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Soho is the whole appeal - but also the catch. It's loud, late and chaotic; the hotel always stays serene, but step out at night and you'll be in the thick of it.
